1) Domestic Demand

The domestic demand for specialty chemical products in 1997 was $19,289 million, which was an increase of 1.7% compared to $18,640 million in 1995.

The largest local market in this industry was pharmaceuticals, with $5,514 million sales in 1997. The next largest markets were cosmetics and perfumery with $3,501 million; paints & inks with $2,083 million and photo-chemicals with $1,748 million. These 4 sectors are 66.6% of the production of this industry.

 

2) Production Status

The production of the specialty chemical industry increased in 1997 by 3.0% to $16,406 million compared to $15,466 million in 1995.

In 1997 year the largest production sector was the pharmaceutical sector with $5,183 million; the next largest sectors were cosmetics and perfumery($3,123 million); paints & inks($2,047 million); photo-chemicals($1,216 million). These 4 sectors were 70.5% of the production of this industry.

The sector which increased the most in production was cosmetics and perfumery 23.3%; dyes & pigments increased by 5.5%; and photo-chemicals increased by 2.7%.

 

3) Production Status for Each Sector

The pharmaceutical sector continuded from 1995 lo record the largest production share in 1997, reaching 31.6%. The next sectors to have production growth were cosmetics & perfumery with 19.0%, and paints & inks with 12.5%. The sector which had the lowest growth in production was adhesives with a 3.4% increase,

The sector which recoreded the largest production decrease was paints & inks with 12.5% production in 1997 compared with the previous year production 14.5% in 1995, which was about 2.0% decrease.

4) Production Index

According to the specialty chemical industry sector production index, photo-chemicals recorded the highest in 1997 with 3,144 points; surfactants were second with 1,659 points; followed by dyes & pigments with 835 and cosmetics & perfumery with 735, The sector recording the largest increment of production index is photo-chemicals which increased to 3,144 in 1997 from 2,415 in 1995, a 729 increase. Cosmetics & pefumery followed with 343 and dyes & pigments with 224 respectively.

5) Production Rate Per Capita

According to the sector production rate per capita, agrochemicals recorded the highest with $354.3 thousand, The next highest sectors were cosmetics & perfumery with $297.6 thousand and surfactants with $24.2 thousand. The most growth was recorded by dyes & pigments with an increase of 21.0% to $206.4

thousand in 1997 from $173.9 thousand in 1995. Cosmetics & perfumery increased by 17.9%; photo-chemicals by 13.3%; and surfactants by 13.2%

6) Value-Added Rate

The sector with the highest value-added rate in 1997 was cosmetics & perfumery with 63.0%. The next highest value-added sector was pharmaceuticals with 61.5%. These 2 sectors recorded over 61.3% of the Value-added rates among all the sectors of the specialty chemical industry. The rest of the sectors recorded lower than the above two sectors. The sector with the largest increase of value-added rates was photo-chemicals by a 4.5% increase to 48.4% in 1997 from 43.9% in 1995. It was followed by the pharmaceuticals with a 1.4% increase, adhesives by a 3,0% increase. Paints & inks and the other sectors recorded decreases, and in 1997 paints & inks recorded a 5.1% decrease in the value-added rate to 35.7% compared to 40.8% in 1995.
