1) Application of Product Patent
The product patents applied in Korea
increased by 32.0% to 1,925 cases in 1997 from 1,431
cases in 1996. In 1997 in Korea, 582 cases(30.2%) of
the patent registrations were applied by Koreans, an
increase of 67.7% compared with 347 cases in 1996. This
resulted from the increase in Research and Development
investment despite of the sluggish domestic economy.
According to the individual nations applying
patents in 1997, European countries recorded a 32.1%
share with 618 cases, followed by the USA with an 18.9%
share with 364 cases, and Japan with a 17.2% share with
331 cases. While the European countries applied 38.9%
more than the previous year, Japan's applies increased
by 22.6% and the USA by 1.1% compared with the rates
from the previous year.

Acquisition of Technology from Abroad
Even though it was not the technology
acquisition of the specialty chemical industry from
abroad in 1997, 6 separate technologies(reported to
the government only) from abroad were acquired in the
specialty chemical industry in 1996, accounting for
relative share importance of 3.2% in the whole industry
and of 75.0% in the chemical industry.
