As of Nov. 1998, there were
foreign investments in the Korean sectors in 182 cases,
a 49-case increase from 133 cases as of Oct. 1997. Of
this investment, 35 cases were in the pharmaceutical
sector(19.2%), followed by paint & inks sector with
19 cases(10.4%), and cosmetics & perfumery with
15 cases(8.2%). The above 3 sectors obtained 37.8% of
the foreign investments in the domestic sectors,
The amount of foreign investment as of
Nov. 1998 reached $1,540 million, an increase of 59.8%
from $964 million a of Oct. 1997. The sector enjoying
the most investment was pharmaceuticals with $430.5
million, which was 27.9% of the whole investment; followed
by cosmetics & perfumery with $188.0 million(12.2%),
and photo-chemicals with $106.0 million(6.9%).
Individual foreign nations investment
status showed that Japan invested the most in Korea
with 74 cases accounting for a 40.7% share, followed
by the USA with 48 cases for a 26.4% share; Germany
with 14 cases for a 7.7% share; and the Netherlands
with 11 cases for a 6.0% share. The largest amount was
invested by the USA, $312.4 million for 20.3% of all
foreign investment amounts, followed by Netherlands
and Germany with $276.7 million(18.0%) and $260.8 million(16.9%),
respectively. The above 3 nations invested 55.2% of
the total foreign investment amount in Korea.
Full foreign investment in each investment
case increased by 10.2%, reaching 31.3% with 57 cases
of the total 182 investment cases as of Nov. 1998, compared
with 28 cases of the total of 133 cases(18.0%) as of
Oct. 1997. The sector which induced the most foreign
investment is pharmaceuticals with 11 cases accounting
for a 19.3% investment share, followed by cosmetics
& perfumery with 8 cases accounting for 14.0%, and
adhesives with 7 cases accounting for 12.3% of full
foreign investment.
Full foreign investment amount increased
by 47.2% to a total amount of $1,046.2 million as of
Nov. 1998 compared with $520.8 million as of Oct. 1997.
The pharmaceuticals sector investments reached $220.0
million(21.0% of the whole investment), followed by
cosmetics with $174.6 million(16.7%).
